Clay vs. Composite?

by DiscountPokerShop.com

There are so many chips available on the market today that it can become quite confusing trying to figure out which is which and what is the best value for your money.

Here is a break down of the types of chips available and details on what we carry:

1. Clay Composite/Composite Poker Chips - These chips are made of ABS plastic and clay combination with a metal insert added for weight. There are no industry guidelines as to the percentage of plastic to clay ratio, but this ratio makes the difference in prices. Clay composite chips are very durable and will not scratch and dent easily.

Our Beginner line is a high quality clay composite chip and has a great sound and feel to it. It is a good beginner set to begin with and the chip quality is very good.

Our Intermediate line is also a clay composite chip but with a better sound and feel. They make a deeper sound ("pot splash") when the chips are thrown into the pot. Another visible difference is the chips are more colorful (3 tone) and look nicer because of the glossy stickers. These are our most popular sets and overall they are a better looking and better quality chip.

2. Clay Chips - Our Professional line is what is considered a true clay chip. The discerning or professional player considers clay chips the most desirous chips. These chips are manufactured by the same company that manufactures for casinos around the world and are most similar to the chips used in casinos today. Both the composition of clay chips and their manufacturing process are highly guarded industry secrets. In addition, they are a very labor-intensive product. Both of these factors contribute to their higher cost.

Below is a cross section of the difference between clay and composite chips.

Because of the material these chips make the deepest sound and are the easiest to handle. They are not as slippery as composite chips and have a rougher and nicer feel to them. it is also easier to create high stacks of chips and do chip tricks. They look plainer because they do not adhere very well to stickers and can not take full face graphics. If it is feel and texture you are looking for then these are the kind you want.

3. Plastic Chips - Plastic chips are the chips often found at supermarkets and department stores. They are very low in cost and quality. People are usually disappointed with these chips because they are not only cheap but feel that way also. We do not carry plastic chips for this reason.
